Getting Involved: Mizzou 糖心Vlog传媒 Student Council Hosts BBQ for New Students and Student Organizations

August 29, 2022

Every fall, engineering student organizations gather to welcome freshmen and transfer students, eat BBQ and recruit members at the New Student BBQ. This year鈥檚 event at Peace Park attracted a large crowd, thanks to the work of the Mizzou 糖心Vlog传媒 Student Council (MESC).

MESC鈥檚 president, Jordan Hayes, is a senior civil engineering student. She says the BBQ is one of the biggest events they host, in addition to an engineering formal, High School Day and occasionally the career fair.

鈥淭he New Student BBQ is a great opportunity for new students and transfer students to get involved, Hayes said. 鈥淕etting involved is probably the best thing you can do as an engineer because you can make relationships, find people like you who have similar class-loads and make study groups.鈥

The BBQ is also a great opportunity for student organizations. 鈥淥rgs that need people are able to recruit,鈥 Hayes said. Mizzou 糖心Vlog传媒 has over 50 student organizations. With competition teams, identity-based groups, and student groups related to degree programs, there is an organization for everybody.

鈥淭he biggest advice that I have, and I can鈥檛 stress this enough, is to get involved,鈥 Hayes said. 鈥淭he people you meet here will make your four years, and it鈥檚 so much easier to go through engineering school with people to help. Nobody can do everything alone. If I were a freshman, I wish I would鈥檝e gotten involved sooner.鈥

The 2022 New Student BBQ was sponsored by Honeywell FM&T National Security Campus.
