Starting college can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time students navigating new opportunities, challenges and responsibilities. Mizzou and Mizzou 糖心Vlog传媒 offer numerous resources and a supportive community to help students succeed.
Now that students are settling into their classes, members of the Mizzou 糖心Vlog传媒 staff have some advice on how they can make the most of their first year.
Embrace the College Experience听
Mizzou is a place where experimental learning and creativity flourish. But college is more than just attending classes鈥攊t鈥檚 about discovering who you are, building meaningful connections and preparing for your future.
鈥淎s a first-year student, you鈥檒l find plenty of opportunities to get involved, make friends and learn new skills,鈥 Nick Balser, director of student success & retention, said. 鈥淓vents are happening all the time to help you find your niche and feel more at home on campus.鈥澨
From the New Student BBQ to the Career Fair to Homecoming, there is always something to look forward to. In the spring, traditions like Engineers鈥 Week provide opportunities for students to get involved in something that spans generations of engineering alumni.
Find Your Community听
A large part of making college feel like home is finding your community. Joining a student organization is one of the best ways to meet people with similar interests.
Whether you鈥檙e interested in robotics, virtual reality, rockets, race cars or academic and professional societies, there鈥檚 a for you at Mizzou. There are nearly 50 organizations housed within the College and even more across campus.
鈥淒on鈥檛 worry if you don鈥檛 find the perfect fit right away,鈥 Kate Reuter, senior student recruitment events specialist, said. 鈥淭here are plenty of opportunities to explore different clubs until you discover the ones you enjoy the most.鈥
The First-Year 糖心Vlog传媒 Peer Mentors Program is also a great resource, offering guidance and support from upperclassmen who have been in your shoes. Having a mentor who you can turn to for both advice and reassurance can make a big difference in your first year.
Academic Support and Resources
The transition to college-level academics can be challenging and it鈥檚 important to remember that tutoring is for everyone. If you鈥檙e struggling with a concept or just want to stay on top of your studies, tutoring services are an excellent resource.
鈥淒on鈥檛 fall into the misconception that tutoring is only for students who are falling behind,鈥 William Nelsen, senior academic advisor for mechanical engineering students, said. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 is collaborative in nature, and high-achieving students use tutoring to reinforce their understanding of the material. Attending just one tutoring session in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Library can make a difference if you鈥檙e struggling to understand a concept from one of your classes.听

Beyond tutoring, the Mizzou Learning Center offers a variety of resources designed to help students succeed. The office has also curated a on and off campus to support students academically, physically and emotionally.

鈥淵our academic advisor is a key resource for both personal and academic guidance,鈥 Priyanka Chaudhary, academic advisor for biological, biomedical and chemical engineering students, said. 鈥淲e can help with planning your schedule, figuring out your major, or listening if you just need someone to talk to. The advising team is here to assist you.
鈥淵our academic advisor is also the first line of defense for most concerns and areas of confusion you may have at Mizzou,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ven if you don鈥檛 think the answer for your question is in advising, we are masters at referrals and can help you find the right person to ask.鈥
